Notes: Don Ellis was a Monster of Jazz-Rock-Classical and his own version of World Music long before anyone had thought of the word Fusion! But somehow his legacy has been almost completely forgotten and for that sole reason, I made this film titled ELECTRIC HEART. There is simply nobody dead or alive that can stand up and perform incredible complex time signatures and odd metered arrangements like Ellis.
He was the first to Electrify a Big Band and preceded by many years Bands such as Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago. Ellis in my book and backed up with testimonials in the Film by the likes of Gunther Schuller, Maynard Ferguson and Stan Kenton was a first in many catagories including his theories of combining Indian Music and Bulgarian Folk Music with Orchestrated Big Band Jazz. He died of a Heart Attack in North Hollywood in 1978 and lived for years with a severe Heart problem. He never took drugs and experimented with health foods even back in the early 1960's. He played music from a artists, purest form and never from a commerical end. He won the Best Instrumental Arrangement Grammy in 1972 from his Score of the Oscar Winning Film, The French Connection.
