Type A - Square - 1911 through 1933
This type is recognized by the square or rectangular shaped cloth containing the embroidered design. Many early type a merit badges had a darker green ring that came on a larger Square which was later standardized by moving closer to a 2-inch Square.

At one point in time, each merit badge came on a roll and individual merit badges were then cut from the roll. Examples still on uncut rolls supposedly exist. The cloth from which types A, B and C were made contained a watermark with the BSA logo imprinted at intervals on the reverse. All or part of the watermark was visible on the reverse of some merit badges
