    Description

This charming antique diorama is entirely hand made, right down to the frame which is hand carved. The figures, rowboat and flower basket appear to be hand formed from clay. The back appears to be painted tin and carries a whimsical message "WHAT ARE THE WILD WAVE SAYING, SISTER! DEAR." The diorama was gifted to me over 40 years ago and was antique back then. The person who gave it to me believed it to be from the latter 1800's and told me that she acquired it in Maine during WWII. The background painting is well done. There is some slight cracking to the paint from age. The flower basket at the boy's feet is a bit loose and will move when the piece is tilted or shaken but is quite stable when hanging. I have never had the courage to take it apart to re-glue as I am not a restoration expert and it looks great on the wall. It measures 15.25" X 11.25" X 2.25" deep. I've enjoyed studying this wonderful piece for many years but am ready to pass it to a new admirer. It's a rare bit of American Folk Art!
